Amidst the chaos of traffic and constant barrage of people and crowds going in and out of LA, is a delightful and surprising market where one can relieve the stresses of the day and enjoy a delicious assortment of mouth-watering food from vendors like Thai street food to eggcellent sandwiches at Eggslut. One of the many reasons I love LA, is discovering places like Grand Central Market on days where I want to explore and experience the collision of LA as a metropolitan city and an up-and-coming food destination.
Grand Central Market is easy to miss if you are in the Downtown LA area as it is located right across Angels Flight, which catches more attention than a market that looks like the entrance to a swap meet, but don’t be fooled. Your senses will entice you to follow the aromas coming from this historic market. Grand Central Market is located on the bottom floor of the Homer Laughlin Building on Hill Street and 3rd Street and extends to Broadway. Opened in 1917, Grand Central Market is the city’s largest and oldest public market. The history of the market itself is just as fascinating and exciting as the assortment of food, people, and vibe that you experience there now.
Once your senses have pulled your curiosity into the market, your eyes immediately measure the vast choices of cuisines to try, the fresh colorful produce, and the thrilling feeling that you may have discovered something that could not possibly be in LA, but in fact, is. The first time I walked into the market, it was by accident looking for a coffee shop and free WiFi, and I felt like I traveled to some kind of secret open-air market in Europe. It was love at first sight and a feast for my eyes and stomach. I wanted to get lost and try everything the market had to offer.
Recently, Grand Central Market’s tenants have had a lot of press for the “Best Iced Latte” in America and even landed some nominations in “America’s Best New Restaurants”. If you want to escape the bustling cacophony of food sizzling and crowd chatter, make your way outside to the Grand Central Market Court which promises to remind you of the pleasant and never-ending LA summer. Visiting the Market is a real treat for the foodie and explorer at heart. It is a unique and thrilling place to experience both the beautiful collision of a city known for its fast-paced jungle with a rich and vibrant assortment of inhabitants and foods, along with a slice of Zen that one can appreciate–all with a delicious, tasty meal.
